Should Influencers/Celebrities be called out for Photoshopping their photos on Instagram?

As touched on in my last blog post, I spoke about how nowadays Instagram is an unrealistic platform for women to go on ad compare themselves to other people, more commonly famous influencers and celebrities.  Many influencers and celebrities Photoshop their images to give them slimmer waists, bigger boobs/bum, smoother skin and so on.  But this leads to the question…. should they be called out for doing this?

There are different arguments as to why they should and shouldn’t be called out for this.  In my opinion I think that they should get called out for doing this as some of the things that they post set unrealistic standards for girls aspiring to be and look like them, which may be damaging to their mental health and self esteem, and even in extreme cases, could lead to eating disorders in order to look skinnier like they see on Instagram.  Because the people posting these images have so many followers and get so many likes, this makes them more influential to some people and makes people think that they need to look like this to be popular and liked.  However this is unrealistic and i personally think that this makes Instagram a toxic site for some young girls, therefore they should be called out.

There is actually an Instagram account already out there which calls out celebrities for photoshopping photos.  Thi s account is called @beauty.false.

However there is also the argument that this shouldn’t be done as it could also be harming to their mental health.  It is also said that maybe these accounts who are so called calling these celebrities out are just getting bad angles of the people, and therefore shouldn’t be calling people out just for the way they take their photos.  The trouble is with calling celebrities or influencers out is that the likely hood is that they actually feel so much pressure to live up to the standards of other celebs and look “perfect” because they are under the limelight and feel as though they need to look like this otherwise they will get hate comments.  I completely understand this as I know that having that much fame must be very pressurising and could potentially be damaging to their mental health, therefore maybe by calling them out this would affect their mental health even more.
