We love our beauty routines to make us feel confident and like we’ve got our shit together; but we also HAVE to love our planet. This is such a pressing issue, over the next 20 years we will reach a ‘tipping point’ of no return on climate change and damages to our environment. As a result, we need to act now, but it doesn’t have to be time consuming or laborious, it can be simple ways as I will explain in these 3 points;
1. Wipes – over recent years our love affair with wipes has grown. They save dampening traditional cloths or removing make-up with a flannel, almost every girl will have used them once, with brands such as Simple having massive success as the number one makeup removal product. Although, once used they are often tossed down loo with disastrous consequences. With reports revealed they are fastest growing cause of pollution on beaches, with Marine Conservation Society volunteers pick up at rate of 35 wipes per km. Make up toners made by Nivia are great alternatives to reduce the chemicals on your skin while saving sea life and beaches.
2. Earbuds – As they are composed largely of no biodegradable plastic, cotton buds are a part of the wider plastic pollution problem. In fact, cotton buds are one of the most prevalent varieties of pollution on beaches in the UK. To help your ears and the planet simply stop using them! They cause a build-up of cotton fluff in your canal and end up in the ocean – so stop buying them.
3. Micro beaded facial scrubs – UK laws are now cracking down on the use of plastic microbeads in facial exfoliation products. These beads enter our food chains through fish consuming them, while polluting the overall ocean. Instead use sugar and honey, this is a much more cost efficient and effective way of scrubbing your face; even if it is more effort, the next time you have sushi think about the microbeads!
